The Round Up
Here are the stories that caught our eyes this week and what they mean for the weeks ahead.
Abortion, other reproductive health info would be shielded in court documents under new proposal
As more states restrict abortion and propose prosecuting those who travel to other states to get an abortion, a new proposal would seal or redact reproductive health information court documents.
The initiative would automatically seal or redact details about abortion and reproductive health information in Cook County court documents, Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Iris Martinez announced Tuesday.
At least two-dozen Palestinian, Arab and Muslim community leaders are declining to meet with White House officials in the Chicago area on Thursday in protest of the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
The White House had hoped to regain support after similar rejections by leaders in Michigan — home to the largest Arab American population in the nation — and the decision by more than 100,000 Democratic voters in that state to select “uncommitted” on their ballots instead of President Joe Biden in Michigan's Feb. 27 primary election.
But top White House officials may be facing the same push-back in Chicago with early voting already under way in Tuesday’s Illinois primary and as President Joe Biden has been stepping up pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Chicago failed to take Catholic archdiocese up on offers to house migrants for free
While Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration scoured the city for sites to house newly arrived migrants over the past year, offers for rent-free space from one of the city's largest private property owners went unheeded.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago has space in more than 60 shuttered churches, schools and other buildings listed for sale or for lease. The church also has other unused spaces from waves of closures in recent years.
Church officials offered up more than dozen of these locations to the city to no avail.
