Labor Day has deep roots in Chicago

This week, many enjoyed a three-day weekend won in large part by a labor movement centered on the Windy City.

This week’s episode features commentary on the history of the labor movement in Chicago and its relationship to the Labor Day holiday.

For more on that history, check out Block Club Chicago’s article, “Why do we get Labor Day off? You can thank Chicago workers.”

You can also read more thoughts on workers’ rights and employee ownership in a piece from our Civic Update archives, “Beyond mere workers’ rights in the market, American labor needs to embrace true worker ownership.”
